You can get absolutely beautiful photos and some gorgeous abstract ones. But it is flooded with idiots with a camera who think they can take HDR photos.

I completely agree with @Skogen on this.

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

A Photographer on G+ recently posted a landscape photo that had utilized HDR but not at all in the garish way that I think is usually associated with it. His photo looked great and if he hadn't said he had used some sort of HDR technique I wouldn't have guessed. I wish I could find it again in my stream or I would cite it here. Anyway, I think there should be a distinction between the HDR technology and "HDR style". I think often what photographers who "hate" HDR are railing against is the style of overly tone mapped, completely unrealistic looking, over saturated images. That is the result of the actions of the photographer doing the post processing, not the technology itself though right? Personally I don't know how to do HDR but I would be open to trying it to gain realistic results someday. Until then I will stick with my GND filters.

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

Well said Jim!

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

Thanks for sharing that Flickr "HDR Landscapes" link. It is hard to find pictures that even remotely look good. That is because joe shmoe is going out into his backyard, snapping a picture, editing it (quickly) in photoshop and then posting on the internet as an HDR photo. I think that if actual photographers take the time and artistic skill to make an HDR photo they can be beautiful! Photography is art and come in many different forms.

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

yup

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

thats what they are supposed to look like....BOZO

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

SORRY MY FRIEND>>>>BUT YOU HAVE NO ART APPRECEATION AT ALL

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

"I as a photographer" having just heard about HDR, and in a half hour you are a pro.
You're a soccer mom with an slr on full auto.
F stop making a fool of yourself.
HAH pun.

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

Like nearly anything else, you have to develop proficiency with a technique. If you slap something together, it will look like garbage, but if you spend time working on this technique, you can produce realistic photos that are better than Standard Dynamic Range photos.

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

High Dynamic Range photography certainly has to be done well. It gives me an outlet to explore the full artistic range of photography not just the often mundane way people see things everyday and has opened up a whole new world for me. I think you have a very narrow minded view of HDR. What if Van Gogh painted his paintings in a realistic style?

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

Excellent article!! But you're saying a hammer is a bad tool because a guy can't drive a nail straight. You picked on the Flickr Photomatix group but honestly pick any Flickry group and 1/2of the photos are bad (mine included). Isn't it more accurate to say you don't like the trend towards cartoonish overly tone-mapped images in the same way you wouldn't like someone who jacks up the saturation, contrast and sharpening in CS5? Would you blame Photoshop for being a poor processing program because someone can make a mess out the photo?

Re: Why I Hate HDR: Photo Technology Porn

Thanks for the link ldebruijn.
